About Julie

Thank you for visiting my blog!!  I am a typical Southern girl.  I am still in love with my college sweetheart.  I am the mother of two precious girls.  I talk to at least one relative on the phone daily.  I love church on Sundays.  I adore coffee and SEC football. I am the first one to dance if I hear a good song.  I am equally comfortable in cowboy boots and high heels.  Above all, I love living and photographing an abundant life (John 10:10).  I hope our paths cross very soon.

My Best,

Julie

Beautiful Boudoir (Charlotte Boudoir Photographer)

What is Boudoir Photography?

When I tell people I shoot a good amount of Boudoir Photography, several misconceptions come up.  Many women believe this style of photography is reserved for the “Victoria Secret model types” with perfect bodies and smooth, cellulite-free thighs :) OR, they assume it is lewd and distasteful photography.  I can promise you, neither of these notions is true.

About 80% of my brides opt for Boudoir Photography as a beautiful gift for their grooms on the eve of their wedding.  You would blush if you could see the GUSHING e-mails and letters these men write to me about how wonderful this gift was.  It captures the beauty and femininity of their brides at the happiest moment of her life.  He is grateful to have gorgeous images of the woman he is about to spend forever with.

Fast-forward a few years, and these brides are now mothers of one, two, three….five kiddos and often feel far-removed from that beautiful girl he married years ago.  I know her story well because of I AM “her”.  I have been married nearly 15 years now.  I have 2 beautiful girls.  My days are jam-packed with work, household chores, bills, after school activities, the gym, etc.  Life in the minivan can feel….well…..less than glamorous!  Don’t misunderstand me.  I am extremely grateful to the Lord for blessing me with a wonderful family but on those long, laundry-piled-to-the-sky, kids are cranky, “what do we eat for dinner?” kind of days…..I certainly don’t feel feminine and beautiful.

That is the exact moment when my camera can bless a woman.  I can remind her that underneath her job titles of wife, mother, friend, room Mom, committee head, Vice President…..she is still the bride he married years ago.  She still has those long lashes she batted his way on their first date.  She still has that  curve at the small of  her back where he loves to rest his hand at a dinner party.  She still has that beautiful dark hair and those full lips that can drive him crazy.

“My beloved is mine and I am his.” Song of Songs 2:16

YOU are still his bride.  When you embrace that woman underneath it all, you can reconnect with a part of yourself that can still feel glamorous and beautiful.

We host BEAUTIFUL BOUDOIR events throughout the year.  We rent a beautiful hotel room uptown and provide professional hair and make-up services so you will look and feel your best.  It is truly an experience you will never forget.  Most women walk in feeling timid and unsure of themselves, but after our session and seeing some of their amazing images, they leave feeling confident, empowered and beautiful.  We respect all levels of modesty and will pose and position you to look your absolute best.  You can wear his favorite team jersey, his well-worn button-down white shirt, a pair of great jeans or a sassy lingerie set.  I can recommend lots of wardrobe options that will accentuate your figure (all sizes and types).  Remember, we are our worst critics but HE still thinks so much of you is perfect :)

I hope you will join us at our upcoming events.  Step away from carpool line and join us uptown FEBRUARY 25 or MARCH 10,2012.  Spaces are limited (and YES!, we airbrush- wink, wink)

Giving Back (Charlotte Photographer)

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Jesus Christ to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”.- Ephesians 2:10

I was born right-handed. It is nothing I earned or can boast about. I honestly feel the same way about my photography talent. I have worked and studied to improve my skills but they were first given to me by the Lord.

That being said, using my camera to provide comfort, hope and ministry to others is my way of thanking God for this gift. He has entrusted me with a unique skill set to help others and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through my work. My lens is the only vehicle I know of that can literally stop time. Knowing the portraits I create will be clutched by a grieving mother, admired at a wedding reception and treasured by a father whose children have long since moved away, is humbling beyond belief.

I position my company to remain profitable so that we may devote our time and talents to those in need of our unique services. Below is a list of organizations we regularly work with or have created to share our gifts with those who need it most.

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

To read why I became involved in this charity on a more personal level click HERE.  Every day babies are born around the U.S. who will never leave the hospital.  Those parents had the same hopes and dreams for that child as I did for my own newborns.  They are only given precious hours to cradle that baby and it is my greatest honor to offer complimentary portraits of their child’s time here on Earth.  I believe these images begin the healing process in the most beautiful way and I know there will be sweet reunions in Heaven one day.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society- Light the Night Walk

My mother donated her bone marrow to my aunt.  It bought her 2 more beautiful years with her children and grandchildren.  My niece was diagnosed with leukemia at age 3.  She endured 2.5 years of chemotherapy and finally WON her battle.  I have seen the anguish that this disease causes in families and we will donate our talent whenever possible to provide hope for these struggling families.  We were thrilled to document the wonderful city walk thousands of area families took in honor or remembrance of loved ones with the disease.  We hope to make this an annual fall tradition.

Field of Dreams

In His Image held its first Field of Dreams event last July which was co-sponsored by the LLS.  We promoted the special event at both Levine’s Children’s Hospital and Presbyterian for all children undergoing treatment for pediatric cancer.  We plan to make this an annual event where ALL children in the Carolinas can join us in our 7 acres of sunflowers for complimentary portraits.  Flashes of Hope graciously provided prints for each family while Split Second Sound provided fun music to make the event a joyful one for all of us.  For at least one night, we provided smiles to their sweet faces and hope to hurting families.  We already have our date for 2012 ready!

Extreme Makeover Home Edition

What a thrill to go behind-the-scenes to document Ty Pennington and the gang build a home in just 7 days!  A very deserving foster family in North Carolina needed more room to bring more children into their lives and ABC did just that.  We had exclusive access to the build site and reveal.  I will never forget the feeling of love and sense of community on the set every day.  Yes, there are still so many good people willing to help others in our own towns and neighborhoods.

Catherine’s House

This local women’s shelter is home for  many Charlotte area women and children desiring a new start.  It was a priviledge to provide Santa, Mrs. Claus, loads of toys and supplies in December of 2010 to the residents.  We offered free family portraits to all the residents since many fled from bad environments with nothing but the clothes on their backs.  The joy and pride they expressed at owning an image of themselves with their children was indescribable.  We hope to work with this wonderful home again soon.

Bosom Buddies

We were happy to offer our services to this fun, community event raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness.  Women banded together, heard one another’s stories, played some tennis and reminded one another that a good friend can help you weather even life’s toughest storms.

I realize there are dozens, even hundreds, of photographer options in Charlotte.  You can find someone to photograph your family for $5-$5000.  Please know that In His Image Photography is about so much more than just a successful business.  We hope our doors will remain open for decades to come so that we may bless more and more people in the Charlotte area with our work.  To continue in that mission, we hope you will choose us to photograph your next family portrait session, wedding or other special event.  Your patronage is helping us to impact people in ways you may never know.  We humbly thank you for your support.

Their beautiful September wedding at Dennis Vineyards was featured in this month’s Carolina Bride magazine.  Many more pics to follow soon.

Enjoy.

The Style Guide 2012 (Charlotte Family Photographer)

This has certainly been a labor of love but I am so proud to roll out our 2012 Style Guide!!

Our process at In His Image Photography is a little different from most photography studios.  We feel it is our responsibility to prepare your family and our team for the best photo shoot possible! That can only be achieved with proper planning and consultation so here is our philosophy….

The ultimate goal of any photography session is a beautifully displayed wall collection in your home.  In order to achieve that goal, we offer complimentary wardrobe design services to help you outfit your family in a well-appointed, coordinated and classic look.  Then, we evaluate spaces in your home that will showcase your portrait art best and design a customized collection of canvas or framed art.  We want you to leave our studios with ready-to-hang, properly designed BEAUTIFUL art for your home.  Seeing your family’s sweet faces on the walls of your home will help you to count your blessings just a little bit more every day.

So, here is our new Style Guide we will use with each client in 2012.

STEP 1:

Clients meet with Julie in studio to discuss “the look” they would like to achieve in their portraits.  We work with the clothing style that suits their family best- traditional, trend setter, bohemian, etc. and design a fashion board using clothing they bring in and/or images pulled from their favorite clothing retailers’ websites.  Moms leave our studio with a working wardrobe design plan down to everyone’s shoe color, Dad’s belt options, etc.!!!  No more “we’ll just wear white shirts” mentality because we KNOW you have more personality than that!

STEP 2:

We customize your color palette.  We evaluate Mom’s hair, skin and eye color and discuss which colors will complement her best.  Then we choose 3-4 coordinating colors for a cohesive family look that will compliment Dad’s green eyes, little Susies’ blonde curls and little Joey’s olive skin.  We want you to look and feel your best at your photo shoot!  The color palettes are also included in the big Style Guide!

STEP 3:

W determine which area of your home will be the best place to showcase your art.  Do you have empty walls in your foyer?  A heavily-trafficed mud room that needs a fresh look?  How about a mantle that could use a change of scenery?  We find wall collections that appeal to you and will fit your space’s dimensions before your shoot so that we can shoot appropriately.  If you have your heart set on a collection above your mantle with a big horizontal family shot in the center, we need to know that BEFORE your photo shoot so we don’t disappoint you with all vertical images.

STEP 4:

Now we shoot :) Your family looks great, you feel prepared and the photographer knows what images you want to include in your collection for your home.  Voila!!!

We can’t wait to start wardrobe consultations in March for our April Botanical Gardens event.  See you all soon in the studio!

How to Shop for a Wedding Photographer (Charlotte Wedding Photographer)

Tonight we shoot our final wedding for 2011.  It has been one awesome year in our company’s history and I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic.  Last January was our first featured wedding in Carolina Bride magazine and we have enjoyed 4 more published weddings since then.  We shot our first wedding in New York City this summer and our first beach wedding this fall.  The wedding side of our business has thrived and I am thankful to all of the couples who trusted us enough to capture one of the most important days of their lives.

TRUST.

That is really what is all comes down to when choosing a wedding photographer.  MANY photographers create beautiful images but you must find the one who is talented and trustworthy enough to carry the title of “Wedding Photographer”. I encourage all brides and grooms to shop around and to shop WISELY before contracting any photographer.  If you surf the web and Google local photographers in any area, you will be stunned by two things:

1.  The sheer number of people who call themselves “professional photographers”

2.  The wide range of price points those same people charge.  (in the Charlotte area…the range is $300-$12,000)

Here are my best tips on weeding out photographers  you can TRUST and who you should investigate further.  Remember, your wedding day doesn’t have the option of a “retake” session and photography is the only keepsake from your wedding day that will last a lifetime. So, here is my list of top questions when searching for a reliable, professional photographer.

1.  Look at their website carefully.  Do you see the same bride and groom photographed over and over? This might be a sign that they don’t have much experience.  Ask how many weddings they have photographed as the LEAD photographer? If you are willing to be a wedding that will build up a new photographer’s portfolio, you will get a low price.  However, you are banking on someone with limited experience so you must consider the old phrase “you get what you pay for”.  Someone with years of experience will cost a great deal more and you can rest in their expertise on your wedding day.

2.  Do they own a licensed photography business? This is very important!! Many photographers start as a hobbyist and don’t consider photography their full-time job.  That is fine and that is exactly where I was 4 years ago.  However, I recognized that I was not prepared enough to be a LEAD photographer so I shot over 30 weddings as a second shooter to gain the necessary experience I needed.  Once I had been involved in a rainy wedding, late wedding, wedding when the tent never showed up, wedding when the bride had an emotional breakdown, etc., I felt prepared enough to handle my first wedding on my own two feet.  At that point, I had to become an incorporated small business.  It was time to pay taxes and run a tight ship.  My clients benefited from this mentality too because I stopped thinking of photography as a hobby.  It became my career and I treated every client and wedding day with that same level of respect. I was working 5-6 days/week on photography instead of squeezing in shooting and editing time here and there while maintaining another job.  This will factor in heavily to the post-production time following your wedding.

3.  Do they have professional equipment? A Canon Rebel just won’t cut it in a dimly lit sanctuary for 300.  Does this person have professional grade camera bodies and lenses? If not, do they rent them at least for the wedding day?  They should have at least 2 camera bodies, 2-3 lenses, 2 external flashes, multiple memory cards, back up battery packs, reflectors, etc.

4.  Do they have business insurance? If someone is running a legitimate wedding photography business, they will have insurance on their equipment.  This is extremely important and should not be overlooked.  What if your photographer has their equipment stolen 3 days before your wedding or drops their main camera the day before your wedding?  Would they have $3000-5000 on hand to replace that necessary equipment?  One who is insured would have replacement gear in hand before your wedding while someone without it, probably would not.

5.  Are they a member of the PPA or local photographers’ association? Their involvement in the local professional community shows the client that staying current in the industry is a priority and having a network of resources is too.  What if your photographer breaks her leg the day before your wedding?  What if his child is hospitalized?  If he/she is connected with other professional photographers, that individual would have a list of resources on hand to call for a replacement photographer.  I cannot imagine life without my photographer friends.  They are there for me in a pinch and I would do the same for them.

6.  Do they use a second shooter on your wedding day? A 9 hour wedding day with 150 guests and a bridal party of 18 is a tall order for just one person.  Sure, he/she be able to capture most key shots but what about all the candid moments? ….the time when grandma decided to cut a rug with a groomsmen?  …when the precious ring bearer fell asleep in the front pew during the ceremony? …or when the father-of-the-bride gave his sweet daughter a gift he’d been saving for decades?  A second shooter’s responsibility is to LOOK for those unscripted moments and capture them. Sometime those moments caught in between will be the ones you cherish most.  (Plus, a second shooter could carry on if the lead photographer fell down a flight of stairs, etc. )

7. How quickly do they respond to your phone calls and e-mails? If several days go by and they do not respond to your questions, that is a bad sign.  Again, do they work another full-time job and therefore cannot respond for weeks a time to your needs?  24-36 hours is ample time for some form of response from someone who operates a photography business.  Their response time BEFORE the wedding will indicate their response time post-wedding.  Remember, it will take a considerable amount of time on their end to process, edit and present your final images.  I allot 20 hours to each wedding (3 full work days) in post-production so if someone has to squeeze that amount of work into just nights or occasional weekends, it could be months before you see your wedding images.

8. How much of a priority is wedding photography to you? Everyone plans a wedding on a budget.  You have to make a priority list before you go shopping.  Is photography #1 or #5 on your list?  That will certainly influence the level of expertise you can afford on your wedding day.  Many people believe great photography is the MOST important take away from their wedding day and will therefore allocate a significant portion of their budget to photography and some do not.  Someone with a $50,000 budget might not value photography much and only allot for $1500 in terms of wedding photography.  They are satisfied with an entry level photographer and would rather have a fantastic meat-carving station and Vera Wang gown. However, I’ve also had brides with a $15,000 budget contract a $4000 photography package because they value professional photography more than the food they would eat or the style of their table centerpieces.

9.  Ask to speak to their last 3 brides. This list of references will tell the real story.  These references can attest to their timeliness, professionalism, demeanor on the wedding day and quality of the final product.  Anyone can look like a great photographer on a website but a truly talented and professional photographer will have glowing recommendations from past couples.

There are MANY other questions to ask, but I hope this list will help you to determine who is a professional and who is not.  Again, there is no right or wrong photographer but there ARE wrong photographer/client matches.  If you value professional photography and end up with an entry level, less-than-professional photographer to capture one of the most important days of your life……regret is the inevitable end product.  I was that bride once.  I didn’t have any idea what to ask my photographer and assumed that because she had a retail location, she would do a good job.  The truth was, she had lost the passion for her craft and did not provide an outstanding finished product.  She took the “highlights reel” and left all candids and artistic moments off the list.  If I could go back in time, I would absolutely do things differently.  I don’t want that to be your experience so do your homework and shop wisely!!!

So, here I am today.  Someone who values the trust brides and grooms put into me.  I have been charging batteries for 2 days.  I have tested all my camera bodies, lenses, external flashes and light meter today.  I have backup batteries, formatted memory cards and even flashlights in my bag.  I have my second shooter lined up for tonight.  I have met with tonight’s couple over breakfast and in the studio to discuss today’s events.  I have memorized the names of all wedding party participants and vendors I will encounter tonight.  My outfit is ready and my car has gas in it.  They TRUSTED me…..I owe them that much.

Extreme Makeover Home Edition- REVEAL DAY! (Charlotte Photographer)

The family is pulling up now!!

Wow! It is truly hard to believe that just 5 days ago, I shot a bulldozer ripping the roof off the old house.  Now, this gorgeous 4,000 square foot home has taken its place! I am amazed at the amount of round-the-clock work the cast, crew, staff and volunteers put into this labor of love.  The Friday family was simply overjoyed to finally see the home for the first time!  We weren’t able to capture the actual “reveal moment” but we were there for the build up.  Excitement was certainly in the air!  I know they can’t wait to get settled in to their amazing new home.  This was an experience we will ALL remember fondly.

Day 5 was in high gear! Even the rain didn’t slow down the hundreds of volunteers working into the night to finish the house.  The exterior and landscaping is nearly complete and the interior is well on its way.  It is hard to believe we shot demolition of the old house just 5 days ago.  The Design Team filmed several scenes and we were excited to peak in on the fun.  Tomorrow is REVEAL DAY and the Friday family is in for quite a show.  We can’t wait to capture it all!

Progress, progress, progress!  Where just a foundation once stood, hours later…..a framed house exists!  It is truly unbelievable to watch the pace at which changes are made.  The home is taking shape and it is gorgeous!  We were able to go inside and see the full layout but alas, no posts just yet.  We don’t want to spoil the family’s big “MOVE THAT BUS” moment!!  The VIP tent hosted a formal event for members of the community to mingle with the cast.  Yours truly even jumped in a few shots with the Design Team.  Enjoy the highlights of Day Three and stay tuned for more tomorrow!

Day Two was crazy fun!  The Design Team had some individual projects underway today so we tagged along with the video crew most of the day.  Ty was swinging his hammer and salvaging some original bricks for the new home.  Ed was teaming up with local kids to help spearhead donations for local foster children.  Paige and Michael were out and about cooking up their own batches of goodness too!

The builders, Wade and Frank, of Bellamy Homes took some time to meet with local middle school kids to discuss the project.  I loved watching them patiently answer all the burning questions the kids had like…..”are you on schedule?  do you ever sleep?  can we help?”  Ty even popped by to sign their shirts and give a quick motivational talk about helping out in your community.

People often ask me about the name of my company, In His Image Photography.  They know it probably has to do with the Bible or Christianity but might not get the true meaning.  Yes, I am a Christian and yes, I do know a good bit of scripture but you don’t need a seminary degree to recognize goodness when you see it.  I believe ALL of us are created in God’s image.  We have all the amazing attributes of HIS goodness within us- kindness, love, grace and servanthood.  Every day that I am on the set of this awesome project, I get to see that goodness in action.  People from all walks of life are joining together to offer the gifts and talents the Lord has given them in order to bless this family.

But whether you hoisted up lumber, drove a backhoe or simply ran coffee to a crew member, YOU were the one who felt most blessed. You see, goodness is contagious and you can feel it as strongly as your own pulse on this set. I can’t think of a better way to wrap up shooting 2011 and to prepare my heart for the true meaning of Christmas.

Extreme Makeover Home Edition- Charlotte, NC (Bellamy Homes Photographer)

In His Image Photography is thrilled to have behind-the-scenes access to this awesome community project!

The very deserving Friday family has been fostering children in Lincolnton, NC for years.  They simply needed more beds so they could love and encourage more kids.  However, their hearts were bigger than their floor plan so the gracious people at Bellamy Homes and ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition decided to change all of that!

The family was surprised by Ty Pennington, one very loud bullhorn and the Design Team last weekend.  They are away while thousands of local volunteers literally build a brand new house for them in just 7 days.

We will be documenting the progress but don’t worry…..nothing will be revealed here.  The Friday family deserves the first peak at the finished product.

So fasten your seatbelts and come along for some behind-the-scenes fun.  We are LOVING it!
